Chahinkapa Park

Park entrances are located at 2nd Street and 8th Avenue North or 1st Street & 7th Avenue North. Park visitors are encouraged to use the many recreational facilities – playground equipment, horseshoe courts, tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball and softball fields, football field, picnic areas, open grass areas, sand volleyball courts, camping facilities, skateboard park, carousel, a zoo, a winter recreation area and the adjacent Bois de Sioux Golf Course.

Picnic Shelters

Kidder Recreation Area

4th Street & 19th Avenue North.  Located in northeast Wahpeton and nestled along the Red River.  Enjoy fishing, gardening, shoreline fishing areas, arboretum, fish cleaning station and a boat access in this area.   Home of the world’s largest catfish “Wahpper,” a 40’ long fiberglass channel catfish that proudly signifies the excellent catfishing available in the Red River.

Campgrounds

Airport Park

Located at 4th Street & 11th Avenue South. Facilities include playground equipment, a baseball field, two softball fields, trails, picnic shelter & a drinking fountain.

An airplane monument, the “Corsair II,” is prominently displayed at the Airport Park and available for viewing 24 hours a day. Designed as a ground attack aircraft, it also was used for air-to-air combat in the Vietnam War. The Corsair II achieved its excellent accuracy with the aid of an automatic electronic navigation and weapon-delivery system.

Mini-Parks

Evergreen West Mini-Park

13th Street & 3rd Avenue North. Tot-size park includes a multipurpose piece of playground equipment.

North Meadows Mini-Park

13th Street & 14 1/2 Avenue North. Neighborhood-size park includes a gazebo and a multipurpose piece of playground equipment.

 

– WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI) 

FEE:  $200 

Instructor:  Felisa Mastel 

This course prepares candidates to prepare lesson plans for and teach the Parent with Child, Levels 1-6, Community Water Safety and Water Safety Aids classes. Pre-requisite: Age 16 by course completion date. Complete pre-test swim skills – Level 5 ability.

 – LIFEGUARD TRAINING 

FEE:  $175

Begin your aquatic career now.  Learn surveillance skills to recognize and prevent injuries and rescue skills for land and water.  You will become First Aide and Professional Rescuer DPR certified, learn professional responsibilities and skills interacting with the public. 

-Prerequisites:  Age 15 by course completion date>  Swim test about Level 5 skill (300 yd swim, retrieve brick) 

Date:  May 10th – May 26th online portion of this class 

            May 30th – June 2nd  

Time: TBD but usually 4:30pm – 10pm (times may vary) for classwork and water skills

 -LIFEGUARD UPDATE (includes CPR and First Aide) 

FEE – $85 

DATE:  June 1st 

TIME: TBD typically 6:00pm-10:00pm 

 

  -WATER SAFETY AIDE 

FEE:  $20 

DATE:  June 12th – 16th, 5:00-6:00pm 

WHERE:  Chahinkapa Pool 

Learn skills to aide in the instruction of swimming lessons.  You will work with an instructor teaching swim skills preschool thru Level 6.  Recommended age:  14 – adult, level 4 skills or better. Level 6  

 

Competitive and Home Team and level 6      

When: June 10th – July 21st  Monday and Wednesday 

Time: 5:00pm-6:10pm 

Fee: $75 

We work to refine turns and starts. Increase endurance and speed and encourage lifetime skills. Great cross-training for other sports. 

Age 6-Adult. Red cross Level 4 or above swim skills (able to swim 25 yds) required. 

 

 

FREE HOME MEET JULY 12, 2023 

Free to all that want to participate.  Closed to open swim during the meet

Community Center

The Wahpeton Community Center is located at 304 South 5th Street.  It is ready for any event offering a gym, kitchen and activities room.  Large events can be held here including weddings, reunions, anniversaries and more.  For reservations or more information, contact Wahpeton Parks & Rec Dept.  701-642-2811

Stern Sports Arena

The Head of the Red Youth Activities Association, which manages Stern Sports Arena, meets on the third Monday of each month, beginning at 7:30 PM in Stern Arena.
